British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
