Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
