Ghostface Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
