In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was effectively a selection process with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

• His list featured various figures, including a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman familiar with the process said the primary requirement was manageability and loyalty, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his clandestine activities in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. He is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
