The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and strained its enormous farming industry.
A Chart Shows No Drought
A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change came after multiple heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons
The path to this point involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
But, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
