The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years Old
Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting temperament brought him a large and loyal following.
In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
