UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
