A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
